SYNOPSIS:

Katherine Schneider's workaday life as a dentist in 1913 New York is upended when a patient reveals details of a deadly plot while under the influence of laughing gas. As she is plunged into danger, she seeks help from the dashing Lieutenant Jonathan Birch, a police officer she has long admired from afar.

Jonathan has harbored powerful feelings toward Katherine for years but never acted on them, knowing his dark history is something she could never abide. Now, with her safety on the line, he works alongside her through the nights as they unravel the criminal conspiracy that threatens her. And throughout it all, Jonathan fears what will happen should Katherine ever learn his deepest secrets.

Join award-winning author Elizabeth Camden for a sweeping and romantic adventure of dangerous secrets and wounded hearts fighting to overcome the darkness while the rest of the city sleeps.

MY REVIEW:

Camden has a lovely writing style, and I got swept up in this mix of historical fiction, mystery, and romance. I enjoyed how rich in historical detail this was and the peek at the early history of the NYC bomb squad. The nighttime setting was unique and atmospheric and added to the suspense.

The story was intriguing and well-plotted, but the excellent character development and growth made the book for me. Katherine works as a dentist at a time when it was unusual for a woman to do so and writes a column about nighttime workers and how they keep the city running around the clock. She was the kind of FMC I love in historical fiction: ahead of her time, intelligent, determined, and endearing. I also really liked Jonathan. He has some things to reconcile, and his character unfolds a bit more slowly across the novel, but you feel like you genuinely get to know him. Their slow-burn and sweet romance plays well against the danger and tension of the mystery. This was my first book by this author, but it will not be my last!

My steep was The Longest Night by Thesaurus Tea from my Amoda Tea February subscription box. I could not have found a tea better named to go with this book! Black tea, apple pieces, calendula, cornflower and sunflower petals, Cinnamon, Orange pieces, Lime & Blackberry leaves, Cloves, natural flavours, it's delicious!
