Cassie, a former sheriff's deputy, now works as a private investigator. This time she's on the trail of a con man who swindles wealthy women out of their money. A case she accepts after the original PI working the case disappears. Cassie is also trying to unravel a second mystery involving a poem that leads to hidden treasure and has already killed five treasure hunters. And oddly enough, Cassie's client is the poet who hid the millions in gold and has now hired her to try to find him.
This was my first C.J. Box book, and while primarily a plot-driven story, I connected with the MC, Cassie. She is a strong, intelligent, caring, and relatable female detective succeeding in a male-dominated profession while juggling family responsibilities. The Montana setting is described beautifully, and Box goes into the sad history of copper prospectors and open mining that left the area destroyed and the residents abandoned. This is well-plotted through both investigation storylines and fast-paced. Excellently narrated by Christina Delaine, the mild suspense and danger made for a compelling story. I could not stop listening and finished it in record time!
