Random in Death

NYT Bestselling author J.D. Robb delivers another taut thriller starring Eve Dallas!

Summer 2061, and a killer is on the loose in NYC, targeting random teenage victims with an easy-to-hide weapon, a syringe full of deadly substances. Eve Dallas and her team must find the killer with little to go on, knowing they will strike again soon and at random.

This is the 58th Eve Dallas book from prolific author J.D. Robb, also known as Nora Roberts, and the series shows no signs of slowing down. This was fantastic! Suspenseful, tense, and high-stakes. I confess I haven't read all 58 but this is a new fave among the ones I have read. And even though this is a long-running series, the books can easily be read as stand-alone.

The premise is frightening. Robb writes this with a sense of urgency and danger and then frustrates her detective with the randomness of the crimes, few clues, and a race to stop a killer before they strike again. These stories have sci-fi elements and excellent world-building, immersing you in a futuristic setting that feels plausible and features imaginative high-tech gadgets. However, I appreciate that Eve still does all the footwork on her investigations.

I adore Eve as a character. She is intelligent, intuitive, gutsy, and an all-around badass. Eve's relationships are fun, and humorous moments are sprinkled throughout her interactions with her colleagues. Her relationship with her husband, Roarke, is steamy and supportive, and I love the two of them together. Robb is a very talented storyteller, and she kept me on the edge of my seat with this one! I loved it! Mystery/thriller lovers and fans of the series will want to add to their TBR.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the gifted ARC.

PUBLISHER'S SYNOPSIS:

In the new crime thriller from #1 New York Times-bestselling J.D. Robb, a small and easily concealed weapon wreaks havoc, and the killer is just a face in the crowd.

Jenna's parents had finally given in, and there she was, at a New York club with her best friends, watching the legendary band Avenue A, carrying her demo in hopes of slipping it to the guitarist, Jake Kincade. Then, from the stage, Jake catches her eye, and smiles. It's the best night of her life.

It's the last night of her life.

Minutes later, Jake's in the alley getting some fresh air, and the girl from the dance floor comes stumbling out, sick and confused and deathly pale. He tries to help, but it's no use. He doesn't know that someone in the crowd has jabbed her with a needle—and when his girlfriend Nadine arrives, she knows the only thing left to do for the girl is call her friend, Lieutenant Eve Dallas.

After everyone on the scene is interviewed, lab results show a toxic mix of substances in the victim's body—and for an extra touch of viciousness, the needle was teeming with infectious agents. Dallas searches for a pattern: Had any boys been harassing Jenna? Was she engaging in risky behavior or caught up in something shady? But there are no obvious clues why this levelheaded sixteen-year-old, passionate about her music, would be targeted.

And that worries Dallas. Because if Jenna wasn't targeted, if she was just the random, unlucky victim of a madman consumed by hatred, there are likely more deaths to come.
